The Dressing Room Has Spoken — Chelsea Players Want Xabi Alonso

Inside Stamford Bridge, There’s Already a Name On Everyone’s Lips. And It’s Not On Any Shortlist. It’s Already The Answer.

According to a report from The Guardian, Chelsea players believe Xabi Alonso would be the ideal option to take charge next season — and talks are already heading in a positive direction.

The timing couldn’t be more telling. Chelsea sacked Liam Rosenior following a humiliating 3-0 defeat to his former side Brighton at The Amex. The main reason for his dismissal? Rosenior simply struggled to get the Chelsea squad onside. His inexperience as both a player and a manager didn’t help — with one player reportedly nickname him a “supply teacher.”

That damning detail tells you everything about why Alonso’s name carries so much weight inside that dressing room.

Talks are moving — And alonso has already Impressed

Chelsea have reportedly held “positive” first talks with Xabi Alonso, with the Spaniard understood to have given his availability for a long-term project and contract.

And it goes further than that. Alonso has already been interviewed for the role — and by all accounts, he left quite the impression. As one journalist reported: “Alonso presented his project to the club, and what he would do — and he was apparently quite impressive to the people that interviewed him.”

He is currently the bookies’ favourite to become the next Chelsea manager, with odds of roughly 2/1.

Alonso’s vision — Total control or nothing

This isn’t a man looking for just a job. Alonso has set out clear, uncompromising terms in negotiations. He envisions building a comprehensive, long-term sporting project modelled directly on the highly structured environment Luis Enrique has established at PSG — and has handed BlueCo a definitive directive: complete operational autonomy over transfers and pivotal recruitment decisions.

Chelsea’s idea, according to Fabrizio Romano, is to get the new manager in place as soon as possible — before the World Cup begins. The clock is ticking.

The shortlist — but alonso leads it

Chelsea have a shortlist of five or six names. Xabi Alonso is the preferred candidate, with Andoni Iraola also featuring highly in the club’s thinking. The Blues have also made checks on Marco Silva, Oliver Glasner, and Filipe Luis — though none are said to feature as prominently.

Why Alonso is the perfect fit

Chelsea need a manager who not only has experience at the top level, but one with a CV impressive enough to earn the trust of the playing staff. That changes with Xabi Alonso.

His record speaks for itself. After guiding Bayer Leverkusen to their first-ever Bundesliga title without losing a match in 2023-24, Alonso left Real Madrid by mutual consent in January — but still won 24 of his 34 matches in charge of Los Blancos. The pedigree is undeniable.

The fact that he is already admired by the players will come as a huge boost to both the club and the incoming manager. Chelsea have tremendous resources, and with full control over recruitment, Alonso could build something genuinely formidable at Stamford Bridge.

Stamford Bridge Has Had Enough Of Chaos. The Players Know What They Want. Now It’s On Blueco To Deliver It.
