Manuel Neuer Stays – Legend Signs Until 2027

At 40 years old, the greatest goalkeeper of his generation isn’t done yet. Not even close.

According to Sky Germany, the World Cup winner has reached a “complete agreement” to extend his contract with Bayern Munich until June 30, 2027 — a major boost to the club hierarchy, who were keen to retain the services of their captain for another campaign.

The signing is expected to take place before Bayern’s final home match of the Bundesliga season against FC Köln this Saturday, with the club already preparing the announcement.

The terms — Loyalty Over Money

While Bayern were eager to keep their number one, a key part of the negotiations involved a significant reduction in his base salary. Currently, the 40-year-old earns an estimated €20 million gross per year, including bonuses. Neuer has accepted the pay cut — a statement in itself. This was never about money. It’s about legacy.

Fifteen years. One club. A living legend.

Having joined the club from Schalke in 2011, Neuer has established himself as arguably the greatest goalkeeper in the club’s history. During his tenure, he has secured 13 Bundesliga titles and two Champions League trophies, becoming the face of the club’s modern golden era.

After wrapping up his 13th Bundesliga title this season, Neuer equalled Thomas Müller’s all-time haul — and with another season in Germany’s top flight, he could surpass Oliver Kahn’s record in all-time Bundesliga appearances.

By extending his stay until 2027, Neuer will also have the opportunity to surpass 600 total club appearances — further cementing his place among the most decorated and longest-serving players in Bayern’s illustrious history.

The succession plan — enter jonas urbig

This deal isn’t just about Neuer. It’s about what comes next. Bayern’s coaching staff are determined to integrate Jonas Urbig more frequently to ensure a smooth transition when Neuer eventually decides to hang up his gloves. Urbig made 13 Bundesliga appearances in 2025/26 — and that number is set to grow.

Rummenigge has highlighted Neuer’s leadership and mentor role for his successor — the extension ensuring a smooth transition where Neuer can pass on his knowledge while Bayern gradually prepares for life after their legendary captain.

Could a world cup return be on the cards?

Here’s the subplot nobody saw coming. Despite announcing his retirement from international football in August 2024, there is mounting talk within the German Football Association that Neuer could still be included in Julian Nagelsmann’s 26-man squad for the 2026 FIFA World Cup — which would mark a dramatic return to international duty for Bayern’s veteran goalkeeper.

One more season. One more shot at history. Manuel Neuer isn’t finished — and neither is the story.
