Wembanyama Dominates as Spurs Advance — San Antonio Through to Western Conference Semi-Finals
Victor Wembanyama delivered a commanding series-closing performance as the San Antonio Spurs eliminated the Portland Trail Blazers 114-95 in Game 5, completing a hard-fought 4-1 series victory to book their place in the Western Conference semi-finals.
The French phenomenon was at his imperious best when it mattered most, finishing with 17 points, 14 rebounds, 3 assists and a stunning 6 blocks — producing a double-double while shooting an immaculate 71.4% from the field and a perfect 6-for-6 from the free-throw line. His defensive presence was suffocating throughout, recording a defensive rating of just 82.5 — by far the best on the floor — as he imposed his will on both ends of the court.
It was a comprehensive team effort from San Antonio all the same. Julian Champagnie came off the bench to ignite the offence with 19 points on a scorching 71.4% shooting from three, while playmaker De’Aaron Fox orchestrated beautifully with 21 points and 9 assists. Dylan Harper added 17 points with three crucial steals, and Stephon Castle chipped in with 15 points and 5 assists.
The Spurs dominated from the opening tip, leading 36-24 after the first quarter and never once relinquishing control. Their 54.7% field goal percentage and 40% from three told the story of an offence that was simply too sharp for Portland to handle. San Antonio racked up 44 points in the paint, 16 fast-break points, and at one stage led by as many as 28 points.
Portland’s Deni Avdija top-scored for the Blazers with 22 points, but his side shot a dismal 35.1% from the field and a woeful 23.4% from deep — nowhere near enough against a side this formidable. Jrue Holiday was well below his best with just 8 points from 14 attempts, and the Blazers’ playoff adventure is now over for another year.
The second-seeded Spurs now await the winner of the closely contested Minnesota Timberwolves versus Denver Nuggets series — where Minnesota currently hold a 3-2 series lead — in what promises to be a blockbuster Western Conference semi-final.
At just 22 years old, Wembanyama continues to redefine what is possible. The era has well and truly begun.
