He’s Staying Home — Kobbie Mainoo Commits Future to Manchester United Until 2031
The future is secured. After months of uncertainty, speculation, and a period that threatened to end one of English football’s most compelling academy stories prematurely, Kobbie Mainoo has signed on the dotted line — and Old Trafford can breathe again.
Manchester United have officially confirmed that Kobbie Mainoo has signed a new contract extending his stay at the club until June 2031. The Stockport-born midfielder, who has been associated with Manchester United since the age of six, has already made 98 appearances for the club — scoring the decisive goal in the 2024 FA Cup final and representing England in the Euro 2024 final.
Mainoo said: “Manchester United has always been my home. This special club means everything to my family. I have grown up seeing the impact that our club has on our city, and I relish the responsibility that comes with wearing this shirt.”
The signing ends a saga that very nearly had a very different ending. Since Michael Carrick took over as interim manager following Ruben Amorim’s sacking in January, Mainoo has enjoyed a new lease of life — starting 11 of the past 12 league games and completing the full 90 minutes in almost every one of them. The contrast with his situation under Amorim — where he reportedly considered a loan move away — could not be more stark.
The new deal places Mainoo among the club’s first-team-level earners, with a base wage understood to be close to £135,000 per week plus potential performance bonuses — a significant and well-deserved upgrade from his previous terms.
Director of Football Jason Wilcox described Mainoo as “one of the most naturally gifted young footballers in the world,” adding: “His technical ability, dedicated professionalism and humble personality make him the perfect role model for our young players and a true credit to our outstanding Academy system. We have full confidence that he will develop into one of the best players in the world.”
Mainoo is expected to play a pivotal role this Sunday when United host rivals Liverpool in a high-stakes Premier League clash at Old Trafford — a game that could go a long way to sealing Champions League qualification for next season.
From a six-year-old boy walking through the doors of the United Academy to a Champions League-bound starter at Old Trafford — Kobbie Mainoo’s story is only just beginning. And now, it will continue in red until 2031.
