Borussia Dortmund advanced to the UEFA Champions League quarterfinals with a goal in each half, defeating PSV Eindhoven 2-0 (3-1 on aggregate) at Signal Iduna Park.

PSV were taken aback by the lightning-fast start made by Dortmund right from the beginning; a poor clearance led to an opportunity for one of the hosts’ Dutch players, Ian Maatsen, who made Walter Benítez palm a shot over the crossbar in the second minute. However, the goalkeeper couldn’t prevent another goal a minute later, as Julian Brandt took advantage of more sloppy defending by the visitors to set up Jadon Sancho, whose 20-yard strike hit the back of the net.

The Schwarzgelben continued to attack relentlessly, with Niclas Füllkrug leading the charge. On the 18th minute, Brandt’s shot from a difficult angle was saved by Benítez, only for Donyell Malen to fire the rebound straight at the goalkeeper. Malen, a former PSV player, missed two more chances in his attempt to score his second goal of the match, while Guus Til, Johan Bakayoko, and Luuk de Jong all squandered opportunities to equalize before halftime.

Despite the halftime break, Malen remained determined to get past Benítez, creating space inside the box three minutes into the second half, but the goalkeeper managed to save his effort. On the other end, substitute Hirving Lozano came close to scoring with a powerful shot from 25 yards that hit the post, while Jordan Teze’s attempt was saved by Gregor Kobel. Just when PSV seemed to be gaining momentum, Füllkrug missed a chance to extend the lead, heading the ball straight at Benítez despite being unmarked in the penalty area.

In the final 20 minutes of the match, Bakayoko once again tested Kobel’s skills, and just five minutes later, it seemed like PSV would pay the price for not capitalizing on their chances. Füllkrug connected with Marco Reus’ free-kick and smoothly put it past Benítez, but unfortunately, VAR ruled it out for offside. However, in injury time, de Jong missed a golden opportunity, and Dortmund took advantage by securing victory through Reus. He remained composed and calmly slotted the ball past Benítez, allowing the 1997 champions to advance to the quarter-finals for the first time in three years. Meanwhile, PSV will now shift their focus to preserving their unbeaten record in the Eredivisie season.
