Chris Basham, the Sheffield United defender, has acknowledged that the severe ankle injury he suffered last year could potentially end his career. The injury occurred during a match against Fulham on October 7th, causing the game to be halted for 14 minutes while Basham was taken to the hospital.

The incident took place when Basham attempted to cross the ball to his teammates but ended up rolling his ankle, resulting in a horrifying break. Reflecting on the moment, Basham recalled planting his foot in the wrong position and hearing a small crack, although he didn’t anticipate the severity of the injury. Surprisingly, he didn’t experience much pain at the time.

In a recent interview with Sky Sports, the 35-year-old player, who is currently in his 10th season at Bramhall Lane, openly admitted that the injury could potentially mark the end of his career. He described the daily challenges he faces in his recovery, even simple tasks like carrying a shopping cart have become difficult.

Basham also shared the emotional toll the injury has taken on him, both mentally and emotionally. Returning to the training ground has been bittersweet, as he finds it heartbreaking to watch his teammates train while he is confined to the gym. He underwent three operations, with vivid memories of the process until he reached the hospital, where he was given medication to alleviate the pain and realign his leg.

The defender underwent ankle reconstruction, with the insertion of tightropes and metal plates to aid in his recovery. Despite the progress he has made, Basham acknowledges the long road ahead to regain full mobility.

Furthermore, Basham shed light on the impact the injury has had on his family and friends, particularly during hospital visits. They had hoped for a swift recovery and were disheartened when it became apparent that the process would be more arduous than anticipated.

“It was undoubtedly my worst nightmare. I’ve been struggling for five months now, and it has been incredibly challenging. I spent a whole month in the hospital, and it has taken a toll on everyone involved,” he shared.

Basham also expressed his gratitude towards Fulham captain Tim Ream, who was the first to rush to his aid after the horrifying injury left him helpless.

“Tim Ream was absolutely amazing. He came over, held my hand, and reassured me that the medical professionals would take care of me and that I would be alright. The support I’ve received from both Fulham and Sheffield United has been exceptional, and I can’t thank them enough.”

Basham’s injury adds to the already difficult season for Sheffield United, who tragically lost one of their players, Maddy Cusack, just last year. Additionally, the team currently sits at the bottom of the Premier League table, a staggering 11 points away from safety.
