West Ham United, a Premier League team, has focused its attention on the possible incorporation of Lucas Martínez Quarta, Fiorentina’s solid Argentine defender, according to Italian media Calcio Mercato. The center-back, who has had an outstanding season under Vincenzo Italiano, could require an investment of up to €25 million to lure him away from Florence.
West Ham coach David Moyes has already added Konstantinos Mavropanos as a reinforcement in the defensive zone. Although Moyes also showed interest in England international Harry Maguire during the summer, the deal fell through. However, interest in Maguire’s services remains latent.
West Ham’s squad boasts a solid defense, including players such as Kurt Zouma, Nayef Aguerd, Angelo Ogbonna, and Thilo Kehrer. However, Mavropanos has had limited involvement in the Premier League so far, with just one appearance in the English league.
With Angelo Ogbonna in the final stages of his career and Nayef Aguerd prone to injuries, West Ham is exploring the possibility of bringing in Lucas Martínez Quarta as an additional option in defense. The 27-year-old Argentine has been a pillar in Fiorentina’s defense, contributing to their excellent performance in Serie A, where they currently sit in fourth place.
Quarta is a technically solid defender and confident on the ball, in addition to possessing the speed and height necessary to face robust forwards. His ability to score and his versatility in releasing the ball make him a valuable asset for any team.
His outstanding performances in Italy have not gone unnoticed, and he was recently called up by the Argentine national team under the direction of Lionel Scaloni. The defender even had the chance to play for an hour in the 2-0 win over Peru.
West Ham are not the only club interested in Quarta, as Brighton are also closely monitoring his situation. Although transfer negotiations have not started, both Premier League teams are evaluating the possibility of approaching his signature in the winter transfer window or next summer.
In terms of his market value, Quarta’s price has reportedly almost doubled since his arrival at Fiorentina for €13 million in 2020. Fiorentina could expect to get around €25 million for his services in 2024.
At 27 years of age, Quarta might not have a great resale value, but his experience and quality in defense are attributes that Moyes values. If the player is available for a transfer in January or next summer, West Ham are likely to be keeping an eye on the possibility of signing him.
