Raphael Varane believes Erik ten Hag deserves huge credit for his tactical master plan that helped Manchester United beat rivals Manchester City in the derby at the weekend.
Ten Hag asked his side to play to their strengths on the counter-attack in the match, a plan that worked to perfection as United twice caught City out on the break to find the back of the net.
It was a game plan that worked to perfection, as City struggled to break down a resilient defensive block and were punished emphatically when United exposed their own vulnerabilities at the other end of the pitch.
United’s performance was the polar opposite of their humiliating 6-3 loss to their local rivals earlier in the season, and Varane believes Ten Hag deserves all the credit for masterminding the win.
We spoke a lot with him,” Varane said after the win.
In this game we played better in the first half but we didn’t score.
It was difficult, City played well.
“We’re now much better than the last game (against City).
“We know that City play very well.
We knew where to hurt them and we have players who are very fast up front.
