In a stunning display of skill and teamwork, Bruno Fernandes spearheaded Portugal to a resounding 9-0 victory over Luxembourg in the UEFA European Championship Qualifiers (ECQ). This remarkable win extends Portugal’s streak to an impressive 10 consecutive home victories without conceding a single goal.

Despite concerns arising from the suspension of Cristiano Ronaldo, who had registered a brace in the reverse fixture, Luxembourg initially put up a strong defense. However, their resistance was shattered when Bruno Fernandes assumed control of the game. The midfielder delivered a spectacular trivela cross to Gonçalo Inácio, who soared high to head in the opening goal. Soon after, Gonçalo Ramos capitalized on a defensive mishap to bury a low drive past the Luxembourg goalkeeper.

Finding themselves trailing by two goals within the first 20 minutes, Luxembourg faced an uphill battle against the formidable Portuguese side. While Luxembourg had recently secured a 2-0 victory in Bosnia-Herzegovina, ending a streak of 16 ECQ winless away matches, Portugal proved to be a different challenge altogether. Ramos extended Portugal’s lead with a superb goal, courtesy of a splendid sprint and assist by Rafael Leão. Leão, the former Benfica striker, controlled the ball effortlessly before unleashing a precise strike through the legs of Anthony Morris, Luxembourg’s goalkeeper.

As halftime approached, Luxembourg’s hopes were further dashed when Fernandes once again set up Inácio for a header, making it 4-0 in favor of the hosts.

While the Red Lions attempted to salvage at least a consolation goal in the second half, their struggles continued. On the hour mark, Fernandes displayed his brilliance once more, delivering an exquisite over-the-top assist to Diogo Jota. Jota capitalized on the opportunity, breaking through Luxembourg’s defense and executing a well-placed finish to catch Morris off guard.

Jota turned provider, setting up substitute Ricardo Horta for a spectacular first-time effort from the edge of the box. He then took it upon himself to net Portugal’s seventh goal with a remarkable finish following a well-placed pass.

Portugal’s dominance reached new heights when they scored their eighth goal of the evening, forcing Luxembourg’s manager, Luc Holtz, to leave the pitch six minutes before full-time. Fernandes calmly finished a goal after receiving the ball from Horta.

The crowning moment of the match came in the form of João Félix’s brilliant solo effort, sealing Portugal’s sixth consecutive unbeaten game in the ECQ. Félix’s goal not only demonstrated the team’s prowess but also brought Luxembourg’s three-match unbeaten streak to a halt.
