Phil Foden withdrew from the England squad to face Ukraine and is a doubt for Manchester City’s Champions League clash with Bayern Munich after undergoing appendix surgery.
Foden was part of the England squad for the opening round of Euro 2024 qualifiers against Italy and Ukraine, and took part in training on Saturday.
City released a statement confirming Foden had undergone surgery, would not be available to face Liverpool in the Premier League next weekend and that no date had been set for his return.
“Manchester City can confirm Phil Foden has left the England squad after undergoing surgery in London for acute appendicitis,” the statement began.
Southgate said: “He [Foden] came up to me and said ‘I know, I get it’ – he knew exactly what we needed to do.
Their sights then turn to the first leg of their Champions League quarter-final with Bayern Munich on April 11.
