Who is Michael Parkinson?

Born on the 28th of March, 1935, in Cudworth, West Riding of Yorkshire, England, Michael Parkinson embarked on his educational journey at Barnsley Grammar School.

With aspirations of becoming a renowned journalist, Michael Parkinson ignited this passion by immersing himself in the world of local newspapers right after his school days.

His career commenced as a features writer at the Manchester Guardian, where he collaborated with Michael Frayn. Later on, he transitioned to the Daily Express in London.

Engaging in his two-year National Service starting in July 1955, he earned a commission as an officer in the Royal Army Pay Corps. Notably, this made him the youngest captain in the British Army during that period. He played an active role in the Suez Crisis in Egypt, serving as a British Army press liaison officer.

As the 1960s unfolded, Michael Parkinson made his mark in television. His contributions included work on BBC’s current affairs programs and projects with Manchester-based Granada Television. Notably, he was a part of the reporting and presenting team on the daily news magazine show Twenty-Four Hours, which aired five times a week on BBC1 from March 1966 to January 1968.

In 1969, he graced the screen as the host of Granada’s Cinema, a late-night film review program. This marked the beginning of his star interviews, with Laurence Olivier being his first notable guest. Subsequently, in July 1971, he introduced his own BBC series, “Parkinson,” which ran until April 1982. He then returned for a second stint from January 1998 to December 2007, transitioning to ITV1 during the latter run.

According to his own count, he conducted interviews with a staggering 2,000 of the world’s most prominent celebrities.

In 1983, Michael Parkinson joined the original lineup of TV-am, a program in which he was accompanied by Angela Rippon, Anna Ford, David Frost, and Robert Kee. His role involved hosting the weekend edition of the show until February 1984.

Taking on new roles, he assumed the host position on Thames Television’s “Give Us a Clue” in 1984, succeeding Michael Aspel. Further showcasing his versatility, he temporarily stepped in as the presenter of “Film 85,” filling in for Barry Norman in 1985.

Venturing into new territories, 1987 and 1988 saw Michael Parkinson hosting 15 episodes of “Parkinson One to One” on Yorkshire Television. This series was dedicated to in-depth interviews with individual celebrity guests, maintaining the style of his BBC talk show.

In the year 2013, Michael Parkinson shared the unfortunate news of his prostate cancer diagnosis. By 2015, he received positive news as he was declared free from the illness.

Tragically, on August 16, 2023, Michael Parkinson breathed his last in Bray, Berkshire, England, at the age of 88.

Following suit, Nicholas Parkinson entered the stage of life in 1964, marking his arrival. The youngest of the trio, named after his father, Michael Parkinson Jr., made his debut in 1967, and he subsequently carved his path as a skilled Television Director.
