Reports suggest that Manchester United are showing serious interest in 23-year-old Belgian striker Lois Openda, who currently plays for RB Leipzig and is worth an estimated €90m. According to journalist Sacha Tavolieri, Manchester United have begun to explore the possibility of signing Openda and have “requested details” for a possible transfer in the future.
Openda joined RB Leipzig this summer from RC Lens for a record fee of €38.5 million. His outstanding performance in Ligue 1 last season, with 21 goals and four assists, made him a coveted target for several clubs, including Arsenal. However, Leipzig won the competition to sign him.
The Belgian striker has not disappointed in his new home and has already scored four goals and provided two assists in the Bundesliga. These standout performances have caught the attention of top Premier League clubs, including Arsenal, who have also expressed interest in signing Openda in the upcoming transfer window.
Manchester United, who have had a problematic start to the season both on and off the pitch, could be considering Openda as an option to strengthen their attack in the future. Despite recent investment in Rasmus Hojlund, the club could be in need of a new striker in light of Anthony Martial’s impending end of contract and his 12-month option unlikely to be exercised.
Openda is known for his ability to dribble and finish with both feet, and his versatility on the field is also an asset. However, his signing will not be easy as he has a £70 million release clause that will not be activated until 2025. Reports suggest that Manchester United could have to pay up to €90 million to convince Leipzig to sell Openda.
Given Manchester United’s limited budget due to Financial Fair Play restrictions, it will be interesting to see if the club can complete the signing of Openda in the future. However, his inclusion on the club’s target list suggests that United are seriously considering bolstering their attack with this promising Belgian star.
