Reports first surfaced in October that the Glazers were seeking new investment, although the scale of their ambitions – to completely sell the club – has only just become clear.
It was thought that the high sale price achieved by Chelsea when the club was sold in May encouraged the Glazers to explore their options.
Protests have dogged most of their tenure, with fans unhappy at the way the American family have saddled the club with debt following a leveraged buyout in 2005.
There are limited options for successors to the Glazers, such is the high price likely to be generated by a total sale of the club.
Ratcliffe this month told Telegraph Sport that he had no plans to buy a Premier League club following the news that Liverpool’s owners were considering a sale.
